How to tile an exterior brick wall.

The other category of brick veneer is often called thin brick or brick tile. Cover both the brick and the tile with mortar before applying the tile to the wall. Press the tile in place and make sure that the joints are kept even. Adhesives and primers may fail as a result of bonding to an unstable material.

Ensure your brick wall is clean and free from any existing loose mortars or paint. Allow the brick to dry for up to two days before proceeding. Meanwhile measure the fireplace to determine the number of tiles and quantities of thinset and grout that you will need. Figure a represents tile installed over a mortar bed fastened to masonry or concrete while figure b is tile bonded directly over masonry or concrete.

Add and press the grout until all joints are filled and remove the excess. Use a wire brush to remove any loose mortar or brick pieces from the brick surface. Soak a rag in white vinegar and scrub any soot from the face of the fireplace. Continue to spread mortar and lay tile onto the rest of the wall in sections working from the center outward.

This consists of very thin clay or concrete like brick pieces that are only about 5 8 to 3 4 inch thick making them more like ceramic tile than like building brick.

Figure a and figure b are typical examples of exterior wall tiling. You may need to consider moisture resistant boards for wet areas.
