Starting at the bottom of the roof map out a guideline with chalk.
Do not fasten the flashing piece to the vertical wall.
Hammer in one nail about 2 inches from each end of each shingle and another nail about 1 inch above each cutout.
Place nails in the three tab shingles about 3 4 inch 1 8 centimeters above the cutouts near where the tab meets the upper part of the shingle.
Nail the cut off shingle into place about 6 inches from its lower edge.
Both step shingling and racking will yield a watertight.
However make sure that you do not nail into the tar strip.
Use your chalk and tape measure to mark about 12 inches up on the roof for the first set of shingles.
A chalk line will need to be popped going down the middle of the roof from the bottom to the top.
Secure the horizontal flange to the roof deck using two nails.
Not only that the shingles can be piled just to the side of the column being laid.

Lay a starting row at the bottom of the roof along the edge.
Make sure to keep nails out of the tar strip as you work.
Place it so the tab of the end shingle covers it completely.
Continue to chalk additional guidelines based on the width of the shingle through at least four courses rows across the roof.
You will then need to get your measuring tape out and measure the roof.
This will allow the flashing piece to move independently of any differential expansion and contraction that may occur between the roof deck and the wall.
Drive a nail at one end first then drive the others.
After completing a column the roofer can go back down to the eave edge of the roof and start laying the next column of shingles.
